Energy Autonomous Ultra-low Power IoT Devices

The Energy harvested from Wiegand sensors can be used in industrial environments to power low power electronic chips in battery-less & self-sufficient IoT sensors and devices, where the energy generated by a single pulse is sufficient to activate intermittently powered electronic circuits, to perform simple arithmetic operations and to store the results in a nonvolatile memory. The energy from the Wiegand pulses can also be stored in a battery to balance out energy demand of low-power circuits. Current research targets delivering Wiegand sensors capable of producing enough energy to power wireless communication in IoT ecosystems.

Some applications, for example, need hermetic seals and/or free movement, which also means the impossibility of electrically connecting moving parts. Here, Wiegand sensors can capitalize on the changing magnetic fields found in magnetically coupled devices to harvest the energy necessary for low power sensors, that can be used for monitoring important parameters related to environmental conditions.
