The company Walther Trowal GmbH, is a manufacture of grinding and surface finishing machines. The technique used by them involves turning the part about the axis it is fixed on, while submerged in a bowl full of abrasive or grinding material. This technique is used for very hard or soft surfaces with complex geometry, that needs to have the edges smoothened or where the surface needs to be cleaned or finished.
The process is automated with a robotic arm, which picks and places the parts that is being ground. Because of the spinning motion of the parts, the end position after the process is not same as the starting position. Hence the robotic arm would not be able to pick the part after the process, untill it knows the exact position of the part.
An Absolute Single Turn Encoder connected to the shaft of the motor spinning the part is used to precisely record the start and end position of the part being worked on. Hence making it an easy and automatic process for tough to handle parts being processed.
